Trip to state UIL Tennis Championships tops an outstanding year for Rider Tennis
Center High School was represented at the 2019 Texas State UIL Tennis Championship at Texas A&M University May 16 and 17 by Juan Gonzalez, Keaton Watlington and Mauricio Rojas.
Gonzalez won a spot in singles competition after taking the second place spot at the regional meet in April. Rojas and Watlington, who took second place in boys doubles at regionals, advanced to the state matches for boys doubles.
The trip to College Station and Texas A&M University for the trio, their coaches and many teammates and family members who provided fan support, capped another stellar year for Rider tennis under the direction of Coaches Leon Dykes and Beth Nichols.
Juan had a tough match at the State Tennis Tournament, and ended up losing, but he made his team and all those that came to support him so proud, officials said.
Keaton and Mauricio represented Center well at the State Tennis Tournament but they unfortunately lost. The first set was a nail biter going to a tie break.
Coaches, fans and teammates all really enjoyed watching some great tennis. Super proud of all three of the boys that made it to State, it’s really quite an accomplishment.
