Scenes from Monday baseball tourney action at Center City Park Ball Fields
While rain played havoc with four days of baseball tournament action, including Monday's final rounds of play, the tourney concluded Monday afternoon with a pair of Shelby County teams making it to the championship game in their respective age groups.
Tee Ball South Division I & II Regional State Tournament play as well as Coach Pitch South Division I & II Regional State Tournament play started Friday and finished up Monday despite a downpour Monday morning that only added to existing muddy conditions.
Shelbyville T-Ball All-Stars took on Anahuac in the final game and despite a strong comeback attempt they came up short. Anahuac won the T-Ball Championship game, 23-21, with Shelbyville closing the gap with several runs in the final inning.
The Center 8U All-Stars took on Livingston All-Stars in a close and hard fought championship game but came up short, 3-1.
Both Center 8U All-Stars and Shelbyville T-Ball teammates took home runner-up medals and rings.
Center City Park Baseball fields have been filled with hard hitting tournament action which started Friday and continued over the weekend as the city played host to 35 teams in regional action.
While this weekend's tournaments are over, Jason Mitchell, city recreation director, said there is plenty more top flight youth baseball action on tap the next couple of weeks.
From July 5 – July 8, Center will host the AAA South Division I & II Regional State Tournament and the Ozone South Division I & II Regional State Tournament with 34 teams, their families can coaches due in town, Mitchell said.
Then from July 13 – July 18, Center City Park ball fields will be filled with the Dixie Boys Jr.(13 year old) State Tournament and the Dixie Boys (13-14-year old) State Tournament with 16 teams due in the city.
Among the games going Sunday afternoon was action featuring those two Shelby County teams — the Shelbyville T-Ball District Champion All-Stars and the Center 8U All-Stars. Shelbyville was playing againtst Central All-Stars.
The Center 8-U All-Stars took on Henderson. It looked like Henderson was going to advance in tourney action with a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
But a 6-run rally by the Center 8-U All-Stars turned the game around when the Center players were able to tie things up 3-3 before going on to add even more points to their side of the scoreboard. The Center 8-U All-Stars finished that game 7-3 and advanced to play a 5 p.m. Sunday
Among teams in Center for this weekend tournament action were those from Center, Shelbyville, Chapel Hill, Tatum, Henderson, Arp, Nacogdoches, Henderson, EMC, Kilgore, Tarkington, Twin County, Cleveland, Hudson, Dayton, Livingston, Cold Springs, Malakoff, Fairfield, Anahuac, Central, West Rusk and Shepard.
