Flag Day ceremony hosted by VFW at Senior Nutrition Site

Flag Day was celebrated on Friday June 14 in a ceremony conducted by VFW Post 8904 and Auxiliary at Center's Senior Nutrition Site.

In the brief ceremony the American flag flying at the facility was replaced with a new one just as it has been over the past 10 years by VFW Post 8904 Commander Gene Hutto.

Post Quartermaster Larry Hume served as master of ceremonies who said the event commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777.

The United States Army also celebrates their 244th birthday today having been established June 14, 1775, he said.

In 1916, president Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as flag day. In August 1946, national Flag Day was established by an act of congress but is not an official federal holiday.

After the ceremony guests were invited to join the group at the Senior Nutrition Site for lunch.
