Center ISD Summer Food Program Open to All

All children welcome to participate in program at multiple schools

Center ISD will be hosting the Seamless Summer feeding program on three campuses, F.L. Moffett, Center Elementary, Center Inter/Middle School, during the summer starting June 3.

“Center ISD does this program every year through the state,” Food Service Director Tina Byrnes said. “Breakfast will be served 7- 8 a.m and lunch will be served from 11 a.m to 12 p.m, Monday through Thursday. We are closed on Fridays because the district is not open on that day.”

F.L. Moffett will be open from June 3 to August 1, while the Elementary school and Inter/Middle school will be open June 3 through July 18. All schools will be closed the week of July 1 through July 5.

“All the food is bought through the school and is a state-reimbursable meal- just like in the school year, so the meals look very similar,” Byrnes said. “Just like in the school year, breakfast and lunch are milk, an entree, and fruit.”

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture, in 2017  2,497,607 breakfasts and 3,979,608 lunches were served through the Seamless Summer program.

“This week has been a bit low, but next week we can expect 300 to 400 kids per day,” Byrnes said. “We have two cafeteria ladies per campus to provide breakfast and lunch for these children every day. This program is open to all children, even if they live in another county or state, they can have a nutritious meal here.”

The Seamless Summer feeding program provides free meals for children 18 and under, and children do not have to be enrolled in Center ISD to attend.

“A lot of children in our school district and state don’t have food to eat when they are not in school,” Byrnes said. “Our goal is to feed children; we know times are still hard on parents who might need that extra food for their kids.”
